Yesterday,I got a chance to comment on Salim Ismail’s Blog,Pubsub about MainStream Media and Blogosphere. Salim made a interesting point “mainstream media will get squeezed by blogosphere”. In reply to the post, I did make a comment on his blog by saying if we consider Yahoo as a part of mainstream media and they do take advantage of the tail content/comments from Yahoo 360, del.icio.us and plus content from mainstream media like CNN and other news agencies. For Yahoo, blogs and socialbookmarking sites are an island in a big ocean, these sites cannot squeeze a main land and can’t be part of the main land too, they will co exist. Blogosphere is an island (includes social bookmarking sites), it will help promote and improve mainstream media. If yahoo buys Digg and integrates with the existing services of yahoo, it will be like Microsoft buying Linux OS and packaging in a Windows box. Can you make linux users use windows?. Actually leaving Digg as it is now will help Yahoo to promote it’s main stream content and service.comments/rebuttals welcome!.

While I think many people might see Yahoo as mainstream media I think Yahoo isn’t really media at all. They’re not creating anything. Yahoo is as much a media company as Internet Explorer is an internet provider (many people still think they get their inernet from IE).
Yahoo is, and seems wanting to continue, to be a portal for content and community. By buying Digg, Yahoo would be continuing its acquisitions of large active communities. While Digg might not be worth the millions Yahoo would pay, it might be more of a defensive move to stop another giant (MSN) from jumping into the community market.
